Dinner and a Movie…
in Giggles on June 1, 2015
So the other night, the Hubster took me out for dinner and a movie. We like Date Nights. He has a wicked travel schedule, so anytime that we can spend together and alone is a total plus. But possibly the biggest win on the Date Night front is the fact that our kids are old enough to stay home sans babysitter!
Can we please take a moment to bask in that glory?
The Hubby and I have waited almost FOURTEEN years for these moments alone. We have smart and VERY independent kiddos. They constantly and consistently inform me and their father that we are only there for necessities, i.e. driving. On nights out and alone, these are excellent qualities to believe that your children possess. This means that you have a strong likelihood of returning home to a house that is still standing, and being welcomed by the same number of children as you left behind. However, as wonderful as we thought the evening was going to be…we were somewhat shocked by the response of our little genius protégés. While Jeff and I were most certain that we clearly and thoroughly communicated the evening’s plan to our children, the text messages that unfolded between us and the house, told a completely different tale…
Here’s the scene: Jeff and I were sitting at Pappadeaux enjoying a nice meal and stirring conversation, when we decided to check on the kids. Our meal was winding down, and our movie time was approaching. We thought this would be an opportune time to let the kids know that it was going to be another two hours before we made it home. The conversation went something like this:
Parents: Is everything ok?
The Daughter: Yes.
Parents: Ok. We’re gonna go see a movie at 7:00, in the Woodlands, so it’ll be close to 10:00 when we get home. Y’all eat dinner, and don’t forget to let the dogs outside to potty. Ok?
The Daughter: ok…what movie?
Parents: Aloha
The Daughter: What is that?
Parents: It’s a movie…
The Daughter: I doubt it.
Parents: That’s the name of it…Google it.
The Daughter: I did…actually Ethan just did. And he said that we want to see The Avengers instead. We ain’t gonna go see no chick movie!
Parents: reading this message…laughing….
The Daughter: Sorry.
Parents: Ummm….y’all aren’t invited. So sorry, back.
The Daughter: oh…(super sad face emoji)
Parents: This is DATE. NIGHT.
The Daughter: I feel stupid.
Parents: (crying with laughter) No, baby…don’t feel stupid. Honest mistake…
Then Jeff takes the phone, and begins texting…
Parents: This is your father–and yes, you should all feel stupid.
The Daughter: lol, Daddy. Very funny.
So ends our transmission with our brilliant children. Jeff and I just sat there, staring at the phone, picturing all THREE of our kids rushing around the house thinking we were driving all the way back to the house to get them. I am now totally re-thinking my confidence in leaving them alone at the house for Date Night.
Here’s hoping your day has plenty of solid communication!
